Three Faces of Spirit is a 21 day Integral Zen meditation retreat set in Torrey, in the midst of the red rock canyons and alpine forests of Southern Utah. Each week of the retreat is designed to deepen our ability to encounter and embody spirit, in the 1st person via experience through meditation, in the 2nd person via experience through sexuality and intimacy practices, and in the 3rd person via experiences connecting with Nature.

Each week will be informed by the insights of Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, and will include working with the four pillars of practice – cognition, meditation, shadow, and body.

This 21 day journey will include:

• Intensive meditation practice.
• Voice dialogue sessions for insight.
• Integral relationship practices for sexuality, intimacy and compassion.
• Encounters in the grandeur of Nature for healing reconciliation.
• Body practices for strength, stability and energetic sensitivity.
• Integral friendships.
• Healthy and delicious meals with vegetarian options.
• Personal interviews with Musho Sensei.

If you wish for full immersion into the Three Faces of Spirit and the Integral Practice Community, please reserve your space now!  Early Bird rate until June 1, 2012.

Week One: Third Face of Spirit: Nature Mysticism
with David Holladay
July 29 - August 5
An exploration of nature and spirit in the high mountains of Southern Utah. We will camp on the Boulder Mountain for a full week of meditation, nature contemplation , and exploring the Third Face of Spirit. Morning and evening meditation will be led by Musho Sensei. David Holladay, a primitive skills expert from Utah, will teach Nature-based practices. We will conclude each evening with a ceremony honoring each of the elements.

Prerequisite to registration in this first week is prior participation in at least one retreat facilitated by Musho Sensei within the last year and her permission.  For this week, the number of participants will be limited.  Please register early.

** Please note this last week will be held living entirely out of doors. There will be no need for motel accommodations during this week. Participants will need to bring their own camping gear; we will send a gear list to participants as they register.**

Week Two: Second Face of Spirit: Sexuality, Intimacy, and Loving (or Lust for Life)
with Sujata van Overweld, Anne Karen Bakker, and Leon Gras
August 5 - 12
An exploration of the “We Space,” led by skilled facilitators Sujata van Overweld, Anne Karen Bakker, and Leon Gras from Venwoude, an intentional community in Holland dedicated to body and relationship work.  In this week, we will take a deep dive into our being as loving intimate creatures, as men and women, of all ages, preferences and qualities, relating with each other in unique ways, creating intimacy through being with what is in any given moment, getting transparent about what wants to be expressed....
We will lean into the often confusing domain of the interpersonal, helping us to see how this very powerful aspect of our experience is key to our liberation as we transmute shadow into wisdom.  We will discover how the energies of intimacy and sexuality, your lust for life, can and will function as a profound course toward fulfilling relationship

For many years, Leon and Sujata have been working as trainers, facilitators and coaches, guiding men and women in creating, sustaining and developing their unique forms of relationships. For more than 10 years, they have been core members of the Venwoude Integral Practice Community in the Netherlands. Both are deeply rooted in their own experiences regarding intimacy, sexuality and relationships and radiate this embodiment in every step they take.

Week Three: First Face of Spirit: en Sesshin
with Musho Sensei and Mugaku Sensei
August 12 - 19
Join us for a week of dynamic Zen teaching with both Musho Sensei and Mugaku Sensei.  A Zen sesshin includes traditional zazen practice and practical, experiential “in the world” engagement. Relying only on direct personal experience—as taught by the Buddha himself--we will experience the openness and fearless stability within our ordinary mind. You will participate daily in four periods of zazen, energetic body work, interviews with the teachers, and walks in the spectacular Capitol Reef National Park. The week will culminate with a Jukai ceremony on Saturday.

Please join us for one full week or two full weeks or the entire three-week program. Each week begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday and ends at noon the following Sunday, except the first week which will begin at noon.

Driving Directions

The Boulder Mountain Zendo is about a 3.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City. The address of the Zendo is 261 West Main Street, Torrey, Utah.        Click here for a map.

From Salt Lake City, take I-15 south through Provo, through Payson and Nephi, to the Scipio exit, about 120 miles from Salt Lake City. Take exit 188 off on the right. Turn across over I-15 to the southeast. This will take you past two gas stations and to a stop sign on US 50 E, which is Scipio's main street. Turn right and drive through Scipio continuing on US 50. Go 24 miles and turn right at sign for Utah 260 South, towards the little town of Aurora. Go through Aurora (Watch the speed. They have a police car.) As you pass through Aurora, keep to the left, and you'll come to a stop sign at US 89. Turn right. About a mile and a half along US 89, after you pass under the I-70 under-pass, you will see a sign on the left for Capitol Reef National Park. Turn left onto US 24. Follow this road for about 60 miles. It will take you through Loa, then through Lyman and Bicknell, then through the gap past the turnoff to Teasdale, and into Torrey. (Again, watch the speed limits in Loa, Lyman, and Bicknell. The speed limit changes many times along this route.)

The Boulder Mountain Zendo is just after you enter Torrey, on the right hand side, just past the Boulder View Motel. There is a cottonwood tree on the right hand side, and a sign for 300 West. The road is dirt. You turn onto 300 West to the right, passing over the culvert and an irrigation canal. Immediately on the left, you'll see logs laid perpendicular from the side of the road to create parking spaces. Park here. The tent zendo is then in front of you. Camping is directly ahead of you along the wood chip path.

The yellow house with the tin roof is our house, not the zendo. All the activities for retreats are held in the area south of the irrigation canal, the area with the tent zendo. If no one is in the area south of the canal, come to the house. The phone number is 435-425-2078.

You will be sent a welcome letter with details specific to this retreat when you register.
